There are many applications out there for Linux that can import to your computer. But we will list 3 of them, probably the best 3 open sourced applications out there today.

F-Spot

F-Spot supports 16 common files types, including JPEG, GIF, TIFF, RAW, and others.

Import your photos from your hard drive, camera (including PTP type), or iPod.
Creating a CD of photos is just clicks away. Simply select the photos you wish to have on CD, and choose “Export to CD” from the main menu.

If you have a Flickr, 23, Picasa Web or SmugMug account, F-Spot can export photos to it, while optionally resizing your selection, and preserving tags and metadata.

You can also export to Gallery or O.r.i.g.i.n.a.l. powered websites, or a nicely themed static webpage.

Shotwell

Shotwell Features:
1. Import: Import photos from folders or from any digital camera supported by gPhoto.

2. Organize: Shotwell automatically groups photos taken at the same time. You can also use tags to organize your photo collection.

3. Edit: You can rotate, crop, reduce red-eye, and adjust the exposure, saturation, tint, and temperature of each photo.

4. Publish: Publish photos to Facebook, Flickr and Picasa Web Albums.

Rapid Photo Downloader

This one isn’t like the 2 others, as this application is a pure import application. So if you only plan to import photos/videos, then i would go for this application. No question about it.

Conclusion

If you need a great feature rich application, then F-spot is the one for you. Specially the version 0.71 that was recently released.

If you only need to grab a few photos and easy to upload them to facebook or flickr, then Shotwell is the one to use. It’s more slimmed, but remember it cant handle as much file types that f-spot do.

If you need a pure import application, then go for rapid-photo-downloader.

To install these ones in Foresight, open terminal and write:

sudo conary update f-spot

sudo conary update shotwell

sudo conary update rapid-photo-downloader

The version of the applications we got today is:
f-spot 0.7.1
rapid-photo-downloader 0.3.0
shotwell 0.6.1

More and more users, specially Linux users are starting to use Chromium instead of Firefox.

So here is a list of useful plugins that I use:

If you use Google Reader and don’t want to use anything else for RSS feeds, then use these:

Google reader RSS Subscriber

Google Reader Checker or Google Reader Notifier (by Google)

Those 2 will make you easily to add new feeds and eaily to see when a new post has come to any of your google reader feeds.

If you don’t care about Google Reader, and want a live rss feed instead. Then use this one:

RSS Live Links

That one looks through your open tabs and can recommend all feeds you can add from those tabs. Also easily to modify RSS Live plugin.

Here is some great other plugins:

AdBlock

Browser Button for AdBlock

Chrome TV

Twitter and Facebook

Read about Gnome-Shell – Bleeding edge + installation too.

The GNOME Shell redefines user interactions with the GNOME desktop. In particular, it offers new paradigms for launching applications, accessing documents, and organizing open windows in GNOME. Later, it will introduce a new applets eco-system and offer new solutions for other desktop features, such as notifications and contacts management. The GNOME Shell is intended to replace functions handled by the GNOME Panel and by the window manager in previous versions of GNOME. The GNOME Shell has rich visual effects enabled by new graphical technologies.

To try it out, open terminal and write:

sudo conary update {clutter,gjs,gir-repository,gobject-introspection,mutter,gnome-shell}=foresight.rpath.org@fl:2-devel

These packages have no conflict with existing ones (unless you have installed older versions of them yourself), so don’t worry and just go ahead

After it’s done, run this:

These packages have no conflict with existing ones (unless you have installed older versions of them yourself), so don’t worry and just go ahead.

After it’s done, run this:

gnome-shell --replace

With this command, gnome-shell (and mutter) will take over your window manager (metacity) and gnome-panel. If you can’t see a working gnome-shell (it’s not working for me on several machines with old nvidia/intel/ati card, but runs smoothly on my laptop with nvidia 8400), pressing Ctrl-C should be able to kill the command (you should still be in the terminal window if you don’t take many actions).

If you want to use it as the default environment, do:

gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager gnome-shell --type string

Log out and in, done. That’s it, now you got a really cool desktop in Gnome.

Today i updated opera in Foresight Linux and wanted to try out Filesharing inside it again. As it was some minor issues about it before when running 64bit.

So, i started it up and contacted a friend to test it. And it worked perfectly.

Now that i fall in love with opera, i started to try out their blog and stuff around it. And i found out that Opera supports Facebook and twitter too.
And those 2 are my favourite sites. So when i do something on my opera site, it sends status and posts to twitter and facebook at the same time.

I JUST LOVE OPERA !!!!

So im gonna blog there too, but more general stuff. All Foresight related always ends up in here.

Ohh, almost forgot…. Latest snapshot is 10.00 Snapshot 4529 and inside Foresight repo.
Open terminal and write:

sudo conary update opera=@fl:2-devel

After getting a new laptop and using default theme for almost 1-2 weeks, i started to think to change icon theme in Foresight. Checked out gnome-colors and saw it was abit outdated, took home recipe for it and saw it was written totally wrong. So i started to rewrite recipe and using a external package instead of adding it inside “recipe”. Tested and checked that i could use it, it was done.

To install newest gnome-colors and try it out, open Terminal and write:

sudo conary update gnome-colors=@fl:2-devel

And im using gnome-color-wise, its make my foresight abit greener and folders really fits in.

I’ve been struggeling with an older Nvidia card inside the kids computer, always installed older nvidia drivers with older kernel. The easy way…

But today, i thought: “damn, must get a newer kernel for the kids computer”

after awhile, i thought i can make a new package from the older recipes with today’s kernels. So i started out and it ended great. Made a wiki page of it too here: http://wiki.foresightlinux.org/display/docs/How+to+install+Nvidia-legacy+drivers

There is several other ways too, but that made it easy enough.

Next issue for me was to get an autologin to the laptop, never cared about it before until now. And gdmsetup is removed upstream, so Foresight didnt have any way to make that happen. So i had to google abit, and found a solution. Tried it out and it worked perfectly.

Also made a wiki page:

http://wiki.foresightlinux.org/display/docs/Howto+make+autologin+for+Foresight

So im happy with todays work, 2 great wiki pages done and hopefully will help other Foresight users out there too.
