Iv’e been using Banshee and Exaile most of my time in Linux, Rhythmbox is even less. But using them all long enough to get frustrated on them.

So I started today to look for alternative music players for Gnome environment in Linux. There is several applications out there, but usually they are too lite or built with java or similar.

So i found Gnome Media Player Client (GMPC).

To make it work, I needed mpd first. Compiled few times to make it use so many supporting files as possible. Ended up with this:

##########################################

Quite happy to get so many things enabled.

Now it’s time to get anything isntalled, open up terminal inside your Foresight Linux and write:

sudo conary update {gmpc,mpd,gmpc-plugins}=@fl:2-devel

That’s not all, we need to create a config file for mpd. So it knows where your music files are located and that we want to use pulse audio for it.

First we need to create the folders, open terminal and write:

mkdir -p ~/.mpd/playlists

open Gedit or something similar, and add this inside it:

port “6600″

music_directory “~/Musik”

playlist_directory ”~/.mpd/playlists”

db_file “~/.mpd/mpd.db”

log_file ”~/.mpd/mpd.log”

audio_output {

type ”pulse”

name ”My MPD PulseAudio Output”

#server ”localhost” # optional

#sink ”alsa_output” # optional

}

Save the info above to: ~/.mpdconf

Just change the location for the music folder. Now we can create a database for mpd, write in terminal:

mpd –create-db

All done, now start your gmpc and you will have something like this:

(click to see a lager pic)

(click to see a larger pic)

So far, real damn good. Im very happy with it. So i hope this one will please Og Maciel

Read about Gnome-Shell – Bleeding edge + installation too.

The GNOME Shell redefines user interactions with the GNOME desktop. In particular, it offers new paradigms for launching applications, accessing documents, and organizing open windows in GNOME. Later, it will introduce a new applets eco-system and offer new solutions for other desktop features, such as notifications and contacts management. The GNOME Shell is intended to replace functions handled by the GNOME Panel and by the window manager in previous versions of GNOME. The GNOME Shell has rich visual effects enabled by new graphical technologies.

To try it out, open terminal and write:

sudo conary update {clutter,gjs,gir-repository,gobject-introspection,mutter,gnome-shell}=foresight.rpath.org@fl:2-devel

These packages have no conflict with existing ones (unless you have installed older versions of them yourself), so don’t worry and just go ahead

After it’s done, run this:

These packages have no conflict with existing ones (unless you have installed older versions of them yourself), so don’t worry and just go ahead.

After it’s done, run this:

gnome-shell --replace

With this command, gnome-shell (and mutter) will take over your window manager (metacity) and gnome-panel. If you can’t see a working gnome-shell (it’s not working for me on several machines with old nvidia/intel/ati card, but runs smoothly on my laptop with nvidia 8400), pressing Ctrl-C should be able to kill the command (you should still be in the terminal window if you don’t take many actions).

If you want to use it as the default environment, do:

gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager gnome-shell --type string

Log out and in, done. That’s it, now you got a really cool desktop in Gnome.

After some painkillers, I’ve managed to build ffmpegthumbnailer and also added it for Mediatomb.

The errors i manage to fix was:

aclocal: couldn’t open directory `m4′: No such file or directory

Was fixed by creating an empty m4 folder, that gets removed afterwards. So all Foresight users will never see it.

libffmpegthumbnailer/videothumbnailer.cpp:198: error: ‘errno’ was not declared in this scope

That file is missing: #include <errno.h>

So i managed to make a patch that will add that line inside videothumbnailer.cpp file. + had to add some buildreqs that wasnt suggested when cooking the recipe locally. But now its finally done.

So, what is ffmpegthumbnailer?

This video thumbnailer can be used to create thumbnails for your video files. The thumbnailer uses ffmpeg to decode frames from the video files, so supported videoformats depend on the configuration flags of ffmpeg. Here is some commands to use: Usage

To test them out, open terminal and write:

sudo conary update ffmpegthumbnailer=@fl:2-devel

for mediatomb:

sudo conary update mediatomb=@fl:2-devel

These packages was just perfect for me, weird errors that i managed to hunt down and fix them.

Also follow the issues for ffmpegthumbnailer here:

MediaTomb is an open source (GPL) UPnP MediaServer with a nice web user interface, it allows you to stream your digital media through your home network and listen to/watch it on a variety of UPnP compatible devices.

MediaTomb implements the UPnP MediaServer V 1.0 specification that can be found on http://www.upnp.org/. The current implementation focuses on parts that are required by the specification, however we look into extending the functionality to cover the optional parts of the spec as well.

Most ppl use it for: MP3 and MPEG4 playback for the Playstation 3 console.

Changelog from 0.11.0 to current svn:

* added video thumbnail generation using libffmpegthumbnailer
* added configure settings which allow to enable sqlite backups by
default
* added cross compile defaults for the inotify check to configure
* added configure check for broken libmagic on Slackware
* added libmp4v2 metadata handler to get tags and cover art from mp4
files
* got rid of several compiler warnings
* added storage cache
* added storage insert buffering
* fixed mysql “threads didn’t exit” issue
* implemented YouTube service support which allows to watch YouTube
videos on your UPnP player (in combination with transcoding)
* added fixes to allow PCM playback on the PS3 and other devices,
thanks to mru for his findings. This allows streaming transcoded OGG and FLAC media to the PS3.
* added option to enable tooltips for the web UI, thanks to cweiske for the patch
* fixed bug #1986789 – Error when renaming a playlist container
* added parameter -D/–debug (enable debug output)
* closed feature request #1934646 – added parameter –version
(prints version information
* added parameter –compile-info (prints compile information)
* fixed problem “Negative duration in .m3u files” (SF forum)
* fixed bug #2078017 – Playlist inital import fails in autoscan directories
* fixed bug #1890657 – transcoding tmp file using 2 //
* fixed bug #1978210 – compile error with newer libcurl
* fixed bug #1934649 – typo in –help text
* fixed bugs #1986709 and #1996046 – cannot rename item with & in name
* fixed bug #2122696 – build error with MySQL 5.1
* fixed bug #1978210 – compile error with newer libcurl
* fixed bug #1973930 – Incorrect UPnP class assigned to Vorbis andTheora items
* added a “Directories” view in the default layout for Photos and Video
* added a feature that allows to mark played items
* added support for online Apple trailers
* improved inotify check which was failing with 2.4 kernels

Still missing support for Xbox 360 support, but its almost implanted. Eventhough this service is implemented there is still no Xbox 360 support in MediaTomb, more work needs to be done.

Currently Foresight gives support for these in mediatomb:

Unleash the 50,000 watt flamethrower of content creation in your UNIX box. Cinelerra does primarily 3 things: capturing, compositing, and editing audio and video with sample level accuracy. It’s a movie studio in a box.

If you want the same kind of editing suite that the big boys use, on an efficient UNIX operating system, it’s time for Cinelerra.

Cinelerra includes support for very high-fidelity audio and video: it processes audio using 64 bits of precision, and can work in both RGBA and YUVA color spaces, using floating-point and 16-bit integer representations, respectively. It is resolution and frame rate-independent, meaning that it can support video of any speed and size.

Other features may be found on its features list.

Back to buisness. After getting the information, time to try it out. In Foresight Linux, open terminal and write:

sudo conary update cinelerra=@fl:2-devel

All feedback are welcome!

Homepage: Tremulous

The biggest RTS element in the game is the ability to build structures with a wide variety of functions such as healing, respawning and defense. This feature enables more strategy than just running around and shooting at the opposing team. Another big difference in this game is the two races: humans and aliens. Aliens are more fun to play than the humans due to the ability to climb ceilings and evolve into other classes as they rack up kills. All in all, Tremulous is a must for any gamer looking for a deeper online shooter that is free to play.

Key Features

Free to play and open source.

Combines team-based FPS elements with RTS elements.

Two races: aliens and humans.

Can play as various alien classes with special abilities.

Different advancement structure for humans and aliens.

Humans get credits for kills that can be used to buy gear while aliens change classes with kills.

Players can sell and buy new weapons and armor.

Aliens can scale walls and ceilings.

More realistic physics than most other online shooters.

Structures with different functions such as respawning and healing can be built.

In order to win, one team must wipe all the players of the opposing team and destroy their respawn structures.

To try it out in Foresight Linux, open Terminal and write:

sudo conary update tremulous=@fl:2-devel
